When Deepak Sekar, Ph.D., an inventor with more than 100 issued patents came to af&co. / Carbonate, his startup robotics company had just received $5 million of Series A funding. He needed a creative communications firm that could help him position his company at the intersection of technology and food. Sally the Salad Robot was ready for market debut, but the company’s identity had not yet been fully defined. The challenge? Overcome perceptions about freshness, and highlight Sally’s ability to create over 1,000 different salad options, on demand and with precise calorie counts.

We renamed the company, developed the initial logos and verbal identity for both Chowbotics and Sally, and defined the strategy for both brands to help them stand out in an emerging category. Continuing to manage brand communications, we’ve secured a steady stream of earned media in nearly every major national outlet as well as local and regional publications to support the company’s nearly 100 robot deployments. Chowbotics’ reputation continues to grow as a leader in the food robotics field, proving that robots are scalable and can provide fresh, custom meals 24/7 at universities, hospitals, offices and many other locations where they wouldn’t otherwise exist. Chowbotics was acquired by DoorDash in 2021.
